Let me start of by saying, I’ve never wanted to be a newborn photographer. I’m not really a “baby” type of person. I find that most newborns all look the same, and after like two pictures, I don’t need to see anymore. Don’t get me wrong, there are some very cute babies, I just find toddlers and small children more interesting, and way more fun to photograph.
I also feel that different types of photography require different skills. Wedding photographers have different skills than newborn photographers who have different skills boudoir photographers and so on. I for one have never looked into any techniques for newborns.
BUT with all that being said, I like getting to try new things. Friends of mine recently had a baby, and asked if I would take some newborn photos for them. It was definitely a learning lesson.
First, newborns do not care how much time you do or don’t have. They will cry when they want, be hungry when they want, pee when they want, sleep when they want, and so on. So you really need to seize any moment you get for capturing and image. This really keeps you on your toes!
Second, these were all indoor photos. I normally shoot outdoors and/or natural light so I was putting all my lighting skills to the test! I also learned that I really need to create a check list of items to make sure I grab before heading to a shoot. Photography 101 I guess.
It really was a fun time, but all in all, I’ll stick to my seniors and couples to shoot, but its great to get these opportunities now and again to keep learning. Baby Alexis is beautiful and I cant wait to watch as she grows up!
